We all know that one teacher who has the respect and admiration of students, staff and parents. That one person that has innovative techniques that spark lifelong learning while connecting to not only the classroom but the community.

Who is that legend walking our hallways? Now is the time to put them in the spotlight and let them not only shine but inspire others by nominating them for Teacher of the Year!

Nominations are now being accepted for Ulysses School District 214 Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year! Please complete the Teacher of the Year Nomination Form to recognize that exceptional teacher. Submissions are due by Friday, September 18th.

ULYSSES, KS — July 30, 2026 — Hickok Elementary School campus and grounds will close today, July 30, 2026, at 2:00 PM for the remainder of the day. The Ulysses Police Department (UPD) will be onsite starting at 2:00 PM to conduct critical incident response training. This summer exercise allows local law enforcement personnel to utilize the vacant school facility to practice safety procedures and maintain high readiness levels. District officials request that all community members, recreational park users, and residents stay completely clear of the school building, playgrounds, and fields during this afternoon's training. There is no active emergency or threat; the increased police presence is strictly for training purposes. The building will remain locked and inaccessible for the duration of the event. Normal summer access to the campus grounds will resume tomorrow morning.

Thanks to the Ulysses Local Health Equity Action Team (LHEAT), Ulysses High School now features a Dignity and Lactation Room. The former "C" Team locker room has been converted into a quiet, private space. This new room supports the diverse needs of our community, families, staff, and students. This room includes an adult changing table, a rocking chair, and a mini fridge.

Grant County LHEAT Lead, Nancy Borthwick, says that this is the FIRST dignity room in the State of Kansas. LHEAT will also be doing a dedication ceremony at a later date to dedicate it in memory of Ron Smith.

Thank you LHEAT for helping provide a space for Tigers to care for themselves and their loved ones with privacy and respect!

On July 13, 2026, the Board of Education approved policy update in the Parent & Student Handbook regarding student cell phone and personal device use during the school day. Student safety and student learning are the highest priorities of USD 214. In alignment with Kansas House Bill No. 2299, the district is committed to maintaining a focused, distraction-free learning environment while addressing concerns related to cyberbullying, student well-being, and academic engagement.

Please review the changes at https://ulyssesusdks.sites.thrillshare.com/page/cell-phone-social-media-legislation , or in the 2026-2027 Parent & Student Handbook.

Changes to Our Social Media Accounts Starting July 1, 2026, Kansas House Bill 2299 changes how schools use social media and cell phones. Under the new law, district employees cannot interact with students through social media.

Since we cannot always tell who owns a social media account, all official Ulysses School Buildings, club, and sports pages will no longer reply to direct messages or comments.

If you need assistance, we still want to hear from you! Please contact our schools or staff directly through the phone numbers and email addresses on our website.
